[01] Packaging waste: higher recycling and recovery targets due to be
implemented in EU Member States
By today, all EU Member States should have transposed into their national
legislation an EU Directive setting higher recycling and recovery targets
for packaging waste. This type of waste includes packaging made from paper,
glass, metals, plastics and wood. The new Directive updates and strengthens
an earlier Directive from 1994. It aims to further reduce the negative
environmental impacts created by the landfilling and incineration of
packaging waste and by the production of virgin materials. So far only
Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom
have informed the Commission that they have transposed the Directive.
[02] EU’s contribution to the World Youth Day in Cologne :
At the request of the European Parliament, which voted a resolution in
February 2005, the Commission has granted € 1,5 million to the
organisation of the World Youth Day which is taking place in Cologne this
week. This grant is allocated from the EU budget line “Special Annual
Events”. The Community support for the World Youth Day is geared towards
elements which correspond to the European Union’s values and focus on
solidarity and active citizenship. These elements are represented in the
overall programme of the World Youth Day, leading to a major intercultural
and non-formal learning experience for the young participants. Concretely,
the requested grant of €1,5 million serves to co-finance with up to 80%
the logistics, food and accommodation for approx. 20.000 short-term
volunteers helping with the implementation of the World Youth Day. The
perspective of this Community support has led the organisers to take
special care for the European profile of the event and to introduce a
“tsunami dimension” in the official programme as requested by the EP
resolution of 24 February 2005.
Finally, under the regular selection procedure of the EU YOUTH programme
the Commission has granted a collective European Voluntary Service with 100
volunteers between 18-25 years. The grant amounts to € 250.000.The
project title is “EVS - Weltjugendtag 2005” and lasts from 1 April –
30 September 2005 and involves 26 sending organisations from 20 European
countries. This project is intended to help making World Youth Day even
more visible as a significant European event and to provide an important
intercultural and non-formal learning experience.
European Commissioner in charge of Youth, Ján Figel’, will visit the
participants in this project and will attend some of the events to be held
in Cologne.
[03] Commissioner Fischer Boel at the QUINT meeting in Australia
From 19 to 21 August, Mariann Fischer Boel, EU Commissioner for Agriculture
and Rural Development, will attend the QUINT meeting at Sanctuary Cove in
Australia. The QUINT is an informal meeting of farm ministers from
Australia, the US, Japan, Canada and the EU. The previous meeting was in
July 2002 in Nara, Japan. Farm ministers and the Commissioner will have the
opportunity to have an open exchange of views on different agricultural
issues: Prospects for supply and demand in world agriculture, bilateral and
multilateral agricultural trade developments and recent and planned
agricultural reform proposals. On her side, Mrs Fischer Boel will present a
paper on rural development policies. The informal meeting is also very
timely for WTO negotiations as these are moving to a crucial stage in
preparation of the next WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong. Ministers
and the Commissioner will have the opportunity to take stock of the
situation on WTO talks in the agriculture sector. The QUINT starts on
Friday evening with a reception hosted by Peter Mc Gauran, Australian
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. The two plenary sessions
will be on Saturday and Sunday morning. On Saturday afternoon, a field
visit to a processing plant in South East Queensland is scheduled. A press
conference is foreseen at the end of the meeting on Sunday at 11.30.
[04] Enregistrement d'une dénomination d'un produit agricole
La Commission européenne a ajouté la dénomination "Chevrotin", un
fromage français, la liste des appellations d'origine protégées (AOP).
La dénomination s'ajoute la liste d'environ 700 produits déj
protégés en vertu de la législation sur la protection des indications
géographiques, des appellations d'origine et des spécialités
traditionnelles. Des renseignements sur les produits de qualité ainsi que

[05] July 2005 - Euro-zone annual inflation up to 2.2% - EU25 up to 2.1%
Euro-zone annual inflation was 2.2% in July 2005, up from 2.1% in June,
reports Eurostat. A year earlier the rate was 2.3%. Monthly inflation was -
0.1% in July. EU25 annual inflation was 2.1% in July 2005, up from 2.0% in
June. A year earlier the rate was 2.3%. Monthly inflation was -0.1% in
July. EICP annual inflation was 2.1% in July 2005.
[06] June 2005 compared to May 2005 - Industrial production up by 0.3% in
euro-zone and EU25
Seasonally adjusted industrial production rose by 0.3% in the euro-zone in
June 2005 compared to May. Production fell by 0.4% in May after an increase
of 0.8% in April. Output in the EU25 also rose by 0.3% in June 2005, after
a fall of 0.3% in May and a rise of 1.0% in April. In June 2005 compared to
June 2004, industrial production rose by 0.3% in the euro-zone and by 0.4%
in the EU25.
These estimates are released by Eurostat.
