  • [01] EU Solidarity Fund: Commission proposes € 93 million of aid following storm disaster in Northern Europe

Responding to a request made by the Swedish, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian authorities, the European Commission today proposed to mobilise the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) for four grants totalling nearly € 93 million to help dealing with the consequences of a wind storm that severely hit Northern Europe in January 2005. The money will be used for reimbursing the cost of emergency measures that the countries incurred such as rescue services, the immediate cleaning up of disaster stricken areas and the restoration of basic infrastructure to working condition.

[02] Mergers: Commission clears Rheinmetall’s acquisition of 50% shareholding in AIM in the infrared components industry

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed transaction with which Rheinmetall takes over the 50% shareholding in AIM from EHG Elektroholding. AIM is currently a joint venture of EHG Elektroholding and Diehl. The investigation has shown that the concentration will not significantly impede competition in the EEA or any substantial part of it.

[03] European Commission Mobilises Rapid Civil Protection Assistance To Combat Forest Fires In Portugal

On Saturday evening, Portugal requested European civil protection assistance to help combat the forest fires raging in more than 50 places across the country. The request triggered a rapid response from the Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) of the European Commission. The MIC immediately alerted the civil protection authorities of the 30 countries participating in the Community Civil Protection Mechanism. Within less than 24 hours, Portugal received additional fire-fighting airplanes and helicopters from several European Member States, significantly increasing its domestic response capacities.
