  • [01] Statement by José Manuel Barroso on the death of Mr Boris Yeltsin, First President of the Russian Federation (23/04)

The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, speaking on learning of the death of Mr Boris Yeltsin, First President of the Russian Federation has said, "Mr Yeltsin was a key reference in the post Communist transition in Russia. As President he had enormous challenges and difficult mandates but he certainly brought East and West closer together and helped replace confrontation by cooperation. He is best remembered when standing up to the coup d'état aimed at restoring a dictatorial regime in Russia. With great personal courage he had merit in defending freedom. The Commission sends its condolences to Mr Yeltsin's family, the Russian authorities and the people of Russia."

[04] Andris Piebalgs welcomes commencement construction of the Samsun - Ceyhan oil pipeline

The first stone of the Samsun – Ceyhan oil pipeline was laid today by the TAPCO company formed by Calik and Eni. This new infrastructure will link the Turkish ports of Samsun in the Black Sea with the South East Mediterranean port of Ceyhan. The construction of this pipeline will further reduce the increasing pressure of maritime oil transport through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles straights.

[06] Louis Michel to visit the Middle East to assess the humanitarian situation

Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, will visit the Middle East from April 25-29 taking in Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Jordan and Syria. He will assess, at first hand, the humanitarian situation in the region which hosts one of the biggest refugee and displaced population in the world. He will notably visit camps of Palestinian and Iraqi refugees. He will also have discussions with the Commission's implementing partners in the provision of relief assistance. He will also meet leading politicians in the region and deliver a speech on the humanitarian dimension of the Middle-East Peace Process at a conference on humanitarian issues.

[07] European Research for Product Safety : reducing Animal Testing through Innovation

Today - World Lab Animal Day - the European Commission is presenting its activities in the area of research for reducing animal testing. Over the past 20 years, Europe has taken the lead in replacing animal experimentation in product development through dedicated research. EU funding for the development and quality assessment of new testing techniques is allocated to cutting-edge research programmes funded through the EU's Research Framework Programmes and coordinated by DG Research and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The research activities with DG RTD focus on developing new ideas and the JRC establishes their quality via its European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM). Demand to speed up these processes has been increasing recently due to the EU Cosmetics and Chemicals Legislation and the desire to avoid complications associated with drug development.

[08] Commission clears joint venture between China Shipbuilding, Mitsubishi and Wärtsilä

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the joint venture in China between China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation group (China Shipbuilding) of China, through Quingdao Qiyao Linshan Power Development Company Ltd (Quingdao Qiyao Linshan) also of China), Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) of Finland and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (Mitsubishi) of Japan, creating the new company Quingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Company. China Shipbuilding produces ships and is active in marine equipment engineering, designing and manufacturing. Wärtsilä is a ship power supplier and global service network operator. Mitsubishi is a heavy machinery manufacturer. The joint venture will be active in the manufacturing and marketing of two- stroke low-speed marine diesel engines. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[09] Antitrust : Commission receives reply from Microsoft to statement of objections on unreasonable pricing of interoperability information

The European Commission has received a response from Microsoft to the Statement of Objections (SO) addressed to Microsoft on 1st March (see IP/07/269 and MEMO/07/90) for failing to comply with certain of its obligations under the March 2004 Commission decision (see IP/04/382 and MEMO/04/70). Microsoft has not requested an oral hearing. The Commission will now consider Microsoft's reply and decide whether to impose a daily penalty on Microsoft for failure to comply with the March 2004 decision.

[10] Commission approves proposed acquisition of aerospace division of Smiths Group by General Electric

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the aerospace division of Smiths Group plc (Smiths Aerospace) of the UK by General Electric Company (GE) of the US. GE is a leading supplier of aircraft engines. Smiths Aerospace is a supplier to civil and military aerospace of aircraft equipments and engine components. The Commission carefully examined whether the new entity would be able to restrict access to key components or key technological input for its downstream aircraft engine rivals. The Commission's investigation found that the proposed transaction would not significantly impede competition in the European Economic Area or any substantial part of it.
