[01] Better protection from sun after Commission action
Consumers will benefit from a new clearer labelling regime on sunscreen
bottles being phased in this summer. The new labels –including a new UV-A
logo or seal on bottles and a ban on misleading terms such as "sunblocker"
or "total protection" - are a response to a European Commission
recommendation on sunscreen products agreed in September 2006. As well as
explaining the new sunscreen labelling system, the Commission, through an
information campaign in partnership with Member States is seeking to raise
awareness that there are several reasons why sunscreen products should be
only one out of a number of measures which are necessary to protect from
the UV radiation of the sun. The improved labelling regime is being phased
in and will appear on 20% of sunscreen bottles this summer.
[02] Protection des intérêts financiers de l'UE : coopération accrue
avec les Etats membres
(! embargo 12h30 !) La Commission européenne a publié aujourd'hui le
rapport annuel 2006 concernant la protection des intérêts financiers des
Communautés et la lutte contre la fraude. Il s'agit d'un domaine de
responsabilité partagée entre la Commission et les Etats membres. Le
rapport présente les mesures les plus importantes prises en 2006 par les
Etats membres et la Commission afin d'améliorer la prévention et la lutte
contre la fraude. Une évaluation statistique de toutes les irrégularités
communiquées à la Commission par les Etats membres montre que le nombre
total des irrégularités a augmenté pour l'agriculture, les fonds de
cohésion et de préadhésion, et qu'il a diminué pour les ressources
propres et les fonds structurels. Alors que plus de 12.000 irrégularités
ont été communiquées, l'amélioration de la rapidité et de la qualité
de la communication reste un objectif.
[03] Commission clears joint venture between Deutsche Bank, STRABAG Invest
and Dimitri Garkusha
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of a newly created company
constituting a joint venture by Deutsche Bank AG of Germany, STRABAG Invest
GmbH, a subsidiary of STRABAG SE Wien of Austria and Mr Dmitri Garkusha of
Russia. Deutsche Bank is active in banking, finance and related services.
STRABAG Invest is active in investment in civil engineering projects,
project development, building construction and the production of building
materials. Mr Dmitri Garkusha is a Russian citizen who provides consulting
services on the financing of real estate projects in Moscow. The operation
was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
[04] Migration Management – Solidarity in Action : new EU financial
support to be made available in 2007
Following the adoption of the 2007 Work Programme for the new Preparatory
Action Solidarity in Action, two call for proposals - accounting for a
total of €14,000,000 - are being launched today for actions in the areas
of return of illegal immigrants, employment of returnees, information on
immigration and reception challenges.
[05] Trans-Sahara Gas Pipeline conference : future possibilities for
diversification of EU energy supply
European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs participated as a keynote
speaker at a conference on the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project which
could supply gas from Nigeria to Europe through Niger and Algeria. In his
speech, Commissioner Piebalgs emphasized the importance of energy
cooperation through the existing Euromed framework and the forthcoming EU-
Africa Energy Partnership and underlined that the diversification of
suppliers and routes is a key part of the EU's strategy for the security of
energy supply.
