  • [01] Commissioner Kyprianou visits Monaco for meeting with Prince Albert and to launch physical activity campaign with UEFA

EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou will visit the Principality of Monaco on 30 August for a meeting with Prince Albert and to launch a new joint campaign by the European Commission and UEFA to promote physical activity. The Commissioner will meet Prince Albert at 15:00 to discuss issues of mutual interest to the EU and the Principality in the field of public health. The Commission-UEFA advertising campaign aims to motivate Europeans to make physical activity a part of their daily lives, at a time when people are leading increasingly sedentary lives and obesity is on the rise across Europe. The campaign, which will be broadcast on television Europe-wide during Champions League matches, will be presented to journalists by Commissioner Kyprianou and UEFA President Michel Platini at 12:30, on the occasion of the Champions League draw in Monaco. Television pictures of the launch, with statements by the Commissioner and Michel Platini will be available from EBS on 30 August, as will the English and French language versions of the advertisement itself. A press release on the campaign will be issued on 30 August and the advertisement will also be presented in the press room in Brussels. Footage of the Commissioner's meeting with Prince Albert will also be available from EBS on 30 August.

[02] Avian Influenza: Highly pathogenic H5N1 virus confirmed in Bavaria

The European Commission was informed by the German authorities on Saturday of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza on a duck farm in Bavaria, in a region where infected wild birds were detected in July and early August. Upon suspicion of the virus, the German authorities immediately applied the necessary control measures laid down under EU legislation, and the Commission will adopt a Decision later today to confirm the risk areas set up around the outbreak.

esPRESSo: Ferrero-Waldner on new arrests of Belarusian opposition members

European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, said:

"Following the arrest and detention of several members of the Belarusian democratic opposition in July, which I had strongly condemned, I am dismayed by the new arrests and detentions reported over the last days, including that of Mr. Severinets, who was also among those detained in July.

I call once again on the Belarusian authorities to release all those detained on political grounds without delay, and to respect the inalienable rights of the people of Belarus to assemble peacefully and express themselves freely.
