[02] Commission calls for better implementation of Community law to safeguard the interests of citizens and business

The European Commission has today put forward a series of proposals to improve the application of Community law by Member States. The Commission, as part of its better regulation priority, aims at having Community law implemented more effectively and at resolving more quickly complaints made by citizens and business. To maintain Europe's competitiveness in a fast changing world, it is important that policy-making is responsive to citizens' and business interests. The Commission, as guardian of the treaties, sets out a programme of possible improvements. It seeks to identify, through different instruments, the implementation issues in preparing new or amending legislation. It aims at a renewed commitment from Member States to improve information-provision and problem-solving for citizens and business. It commits itself to: more targeted problem- prevention; increased efficiency through more frequent decision-taking and prioritisation in the management of legal proceedings brought by the Commission; as well as increased transparency in the application and enforcement of the law. It suggests more strategic planning of the implementation, management and enforcement of Community legislation and increased review of results between Commission, Parliament and Council.

[04] Commission clears acquisition of EMH by KESA

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Electrodomésticos Menaje del Hogar S.A. (EMH) of Spain by KESA Electricals plc (KESA) of the UK. KESA and EMH are both active in the retailing of electrical consumer goods, such as domestic appliances, visual and audio products, telecommunications and media products. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[06] Colombia : Commission provides €1 million to the victims of floods

The European Commission has allocated €1 million to provide assistance to the victims of the floods in Colombia. The aid will focus on covering the immediate needs of the population in the Northwest of the country. The assistance will be channelled through the Commission’s Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.

[07] José Manuel Barroso visits Romania (5-7 September 2007)

President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso alongside with Commissioners Ján Figel' and Leonard Orban will visit Sibiu - Culture Capital of Europe 2007 - where they will attend the third European Ecumenical Assembly and get a first hand impression of the Culture Capital. The first visit of the President to Romania after the country joined the EU will continue in Bucharest, where he will deliver a speech to the two chambers of the National Parliament on 6 September at 4 p.m. On 7 September, President Barroso will hold political talks with Prime Minister Tariceanu and with President Basescu respectively.
