  • [01] Statement by President Barroso on the elections in Ukraine

The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, welcomed the strong commitment with democracy expressed by the Ukranian people in the parliamentary elections. President Barroso said: "I want to pay tribute to the sense of responsibility and strong commitment to democracy shown by the Ukrainian population who massively took part in this important election. The parliamentary elections were conducted in an overall transparent and fair way, as assessed by international observers. This development should pave the way for the establishment of a new Government that could resume the reform process very soon and meet the high expectations of the Ukrainian people."

[02] Commission condemns attack on AU peacekeepers in Darfur

The European Commission has condemned in the strongest possible terms this weekend's attack on African Union peacekeepers in Sudan's Darfur region. Louis Michel, Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, expressed his deepest sympathy for the families of the soldiers killed and described the attack as "outrageous". Commenting on the tragic killings, Mr Michel said: "I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the families and colleagues of the soldiers killed in this outrageous attack on the African Union's peacekeeping base in Sudan's Darfur region. I was greatly saddened to learn of these tragic deaths of African Union soldiers who were committed to bringing peace and stability to this troubled region." Commissioner Michel also extended his sympathy to the African Union and underlined the support and solidarity of the European Commission to the AU at this difficult time. In addition, he offered his support for the United Nations' call for all parties to recommit to a peaceful resolution to the conflict and to prepare for peace talks in Libya in October.

[04] Cohesion policy 2007-2013 : Commission adopts new series of Polish programmes

A ceremony will take place in Warsaw today to mark the adoption of seven Operational Programmes for Poland, to cover Cohesion Policy implementation for 2007-2013. Danuta Hübner, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, will sign the programmes in the presence of the Polish Minister for regional development, Mrs Grażyna Gęsicka, and marshals from the regions. The Commission will officially complete its adoption procedures for the programmes in the next few days.

[06] Meglena Kuneva visits the United States

European Commissioner for Consumer Policy Meglena Kuneva starts a three-day visit to Washington today. This follows a short visit to Boston yesterday where she delivered a lecture at the Harvard University. In Washington, she will meet with members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, the Chair of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. She will also meet a range of American consumer organisations and business groups. During her visit she will present the Commission's drive to review its body of consumer protection legislation ("acquis") to make it more consistent and up to speed with changing consumer needs and markets. She will also discuss EU-US consumer protection co-operation, in particular on consumer product and toy safety, but also on the enforcement of consumer rights in distance selling. "Cooperation with the United States on consumer protection is of paramount importance, and is expanding fast," says Commissioner Kuneva. "We have a long history of direct contacts in key areas such as product safety and we are ready and willing to develop these exchanges further. We also have constructive dialogues with US lawmakers, agencies and consumer organisations on a wide variety of regulatory issues. However, there is scope for improvement and for much better cooperation and coordinated action. If we managed to develop a system to share data on fraud, for example, our combined effectiveness in taking the fraudsters to task would be immensely enhanced. I hope my visit to the US will help boost this process."
