[01] Commission's contest gives young Europeans a taste of being a
translator
The translation skills of over a thousand students across Europe will be
put to the test in the "Juvenes Translatores" (young translators) contest
organised by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation
on 14 November. The contest, taking place simultaneously in all
27 EU Member States, will challenge 17-year-old students to translate short
texts on a general subject from one chosen language into another from among
the European Union's 23 official languages. Nearly 1 500 students from
almost 300 schools have been selected to participate. Celebrating
multilingualism, one of the fundamental principles of the EU throughout its
50-year history, the contest gives participants an entertaining and
worthwhile opportunity to see what it is like to be a translator.
[02] Concentrations: la Commission autorise le projet de rachat de
l'activité biscuits de Danone par Kraft, sous réserve de certaines
conditions
La Commission européenne a autorisé, en vertu du règlement (CE) sur les
concentrations, le projet de rachat des activités l'échelle mondiale de
Danone dans le secteur des biscuits et des produits céréaliers par
l'entreprise américaine Kraft. La décision de la Commission est
subordonnée la cession d'un éventail de marques espagnoles de biscuits,
d'une usine en Espagne et d'une marque hongroise de tablettes de chocolat.
Compte tenu des engagements présentés, la Commission a conclu que
l'opération envisagée n'entraverait pas de façon significative
l'exercice d'une concurrence effective dans l'Espace économique européen
(EEE) ou dans une partie substantielle de celui-ci.

China, Suzhou, 12-15 November
Danuta Hübner, European Commissioner for Regional Development Policy, is
one of 21 high-level experts at the Commission on Growth and Development
meeting in Suzhou, China, 12-15 November. The group, meeting in China at
the invitation of Central Bank Governor Zhou, will discuss development
issues under the chairmanship of Nobel Laureate Michael Spence and will
work on a draft final report on driving economic growth and poverty
reduction in developing countries.
