  • [08] Consumer Product Safety – EU-US-China CooperationA joint EU-U.S.- China Initiative on Consumer Product Safety Compliance will take place in the People's Republic of China, from September 19 to September 24, 2008. The initiative was decided and agreed by EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva during her meeting in April 2008 with Mrs Nancy Nord, Acting Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Product safety is a focal area of concern for the three parties and in the past years, all have made significant efforts. They are now adding a tripartite initiative to the already existing and fruitful bilateral mechanisms. The initiative will bring together Chinese, EU and U.S. regulators, businesses, standard- makers and test laboratories, aiming to clarify the European and U.S. safety requirements for the selected consumer products and to achieve a greater understanding of product safety requirements. The goal is to ensure safety throughout the entire supply chain. The programme for the September tripartite initiative begins with high-level talks on 19 September in Beijing. The European Commission will be represented by Mr. Robert Madelin, Director General for Health and Consumers, who together with members of his delegation, including delegates from Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, will meet with Mr. Wei Chuanzhong, Vice Minister of the Chinese Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), and Mrs. Nancy Nord.   • [01] Reform of global economic institutions, better Infrastructure, and more effective aid is key to meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals

    An EU research paper on the UN Millennium Development Goals, which has been presented in Brussels today, argues that the Goals are threatened by the challenges of high food and oil prices and global economic slowdown. The paper suggests that greater efforts are needed for more effective aid, investments in infrastructure to sustain growth, and that social protection should be in each country's agenda. The research was conducted by an independent group of European researchers led by Prof. François Bourguignon, Director of the Paris School of Economics.

    [02] GALILEO: 11 candidats présélectionnés pour la prochaine phase de la procédure de passation de marchés

    La Commission européenne et l'Agence spatiale européenne ont retenu 11 candidats sur les 21 en lice dans le cadre de la procédure de passation de marchés portant sur la première constellation complète du système européen de navigation par satellite (GALILEO). Au cours de la première phase de la procédure, les parties intéressées ont adressé une «demande de participation» et les candidats ont été placés sur une liste restreinte sur la base de critères de sélection et d'exclusion prédéfinis. La prochaine phase de la procédure de passation du marché sera organisée et gérée par l’Agence spatiale européenne, en tant qu’agent délégué la passation des marchés, en coordination étroite avec la Commission européenne, qui est le pouvoir adjudicateur.

    [03] EuroSkills 2008 - a showcase of Europe's best in vocational education and training

    Under the slogan "Skills for a strong Europe" the first ever Europe-wide skills competition will bring together hundreds of talented and skilled young people from across Europe. Aimed at students and graduates in vocational education and training (VET), EuroSkills 2008 is hosting a series of competitions and demonstrations at Rotterdam's Ahoy arena, between 18 and 20 September 2008. A total of 49 trades are being showcased, covering a vast array of professions such as florists and web designers, electricians, motorcycle technicians and nurses. The event is organised by the European Skills Promotion Organisation (ESPO), in cooperation with Skills Netherlands. The European Commission is supporting the organisation of EuroSkills 2008 through funds from the Lifelong Learning Programme.

    [04] Commission clears acquisition of Bank Austria Creditanstalt Versicherung by ERGO International

    The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Bank Austria Creditanstalt Versicherung AG by ERGO International AG of Germany. ERGO International is a holding company of insurance companies, insurance agencies and companies active in investment management and financial services. Bank Austria Creditanstalt Versicherung is an insurance company primarily active in the supply of life-insurance in Austria. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

    [05] Commission clears acquisition of ABX by DSV Air & Sea

    The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of ABX Logistics Worldwide SA/NV of Belgium by DSV Air & Sea Holdings A/S, a subsidiary of DSV A/S of Denmark. Both DSV Air & Sea and ABX Logistics Worldwide are active in transport and logistics. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

    [06] Commission clears acquisition of Buy Vip by Bertelsmann, GGB, GH and 3i

    The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Buy Vip SL of Spain by Bertelsmann AG of Germany, 3i Group plc (3i) of the UK, Mr Gustavo García Brusilovsky (GGB) of Spain and Mr Gerald Heydenreich (GH) of Latvia. Bertelsmann is an international media company active in TV, book, magazine and music publishing, media services and book and media clubs. 3i is a private equity house and venture capital company providing management advice and management to investment funds. GGB and GH provide business consultancy services. Buy Vip is an e-commerce company active in online selling of consumer products in Germany, Italy and Spain. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

    [07] Commissioner Piebalgs meets representatives of the Lativan Biomass sector

    Commissioner Piebalgs met yesterday representatives (Mr.Didzis Palējs and Mrs.Lita Freimane, Members of the Board) of the Latvian biomass association, at "BioNRG” to discuss EU renewable energy policy and, more specifically, the potential for the development of biomass energy in Latvia and its contribution to sustainability and energy security.

    La Commission européenne a autorisé, en vertu du règlement CE sur les concentrations, le projet d'acquisition de Foodvest par Lion Capital, deux entreprises établies au Royaume Uni. Après examen, la Commission est parvenue la conclusion que l’opération n'entraverait pas de manière significative le jeu d'une concurrence effective dans l'Espace économique européen (EEE) ou une partie substantielle de celui-ci.
