[01] Joint statement by the Czech EU Presidency and the European Commission
Without prior warning and in clear contradiction with the reassurances
given by the highest Russian and Ukrainian authorities to the European
Union, gas supplies to some EU member States have been substantially cut.
This situation is completely unacceptable.
[02] Flash estimate – December 2008 - Euro area inflation estimated at
1.6%
Euro area annual inflation is expected to be 1.6% in December 2008
according to a flash estimate issued by Eurostat. It was 2.1% in November.

[03] Euro adoption proceeds smoothly in Slovakia
The changeover to the euro in Slovakia is taking place smoothly. By the end
of Saturday 3 January some 27% of payments in shops were made in euro and
virtually all customers were getting their change in the currency now
shared by nearly 329 million Europeans including some 5.4 milion Slovaks.
No major problems were observed in banks or in retail sector.
[04] Commissioners Ferrero-Waldner and Michel on the Presidential Elections
in Ghana
Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Commissioner for External Relations and European
Neighbourhood Policy said: “I am pleased to congratulate the people of
Ghana for reconfirming their strong commitment to the democratic process in
their country. I would like to pay tribute to the efficient and transparent
way in which the authorities conducted these elections. This is essential
to ensure a credible election process. As the final stages of the
presidential elections are now being undertaken, I call on all parties who
may have complaints to submit these through the relevant legal channels. I
also would like to thank again Nickolay Mladenov, MEP, Chief Observer of
the EU Election Observation Mission and his entire team for their hard work
and commitment.” Louis Michel, Commissioner for Development, added:
“The peaceful and orderly conduct of this second round of the
presidential elections in Ghana confirms the strength of the Ghanaian
democratic system and the resolve of Ghanaians to remain a shining example
of democracy in Africa. The European Commission remains engaged with Ghana
and will continue to support the country's democratic and economic
development in line with the Ghana country strategy."
