[02] The EU Commission will finance the European Financial Coalition (EFC) to fight child abuse images distribution on the Internet

"The European Commission will provide up to 427.000€ of funding for the activities of a European Financial Coalition against child sexual abuse content on the Internet," announced today Jacques Barrot, Vice-president of the European Commission in charge of Justice, Liberty and Security.

[03] Better high-speed internet access needed to revitalise Europe's rural regions, says Commission

Connecting the 30% of the EU's rural population that has no high speed internet access should be a priority for achieving 'broadband for all' by 2010, the Commission said today. Improved internet connectivity is a powerful tool to stimulate swift economic recovery. The Commission today outlines how it would use its own support programmes to boost internet networks and services in rural areas, and called on EU Member States to do the same. Good internet access can make farms and companies in rural areas, especially small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), less isolated and more competitive through access to international markets and faster and more efficient ways of doing business. Meanwhile, the European Parliament and the Council are discussing a Commission proposal to make a further € 1 billion available through the European Economic Recovery Plan to spread high speed internet access more widely across all regions of Europe.

[04] Five major high-tech firms pledge to promote more "Cyberellas"

In today's global financial crisis, jobs in information and communication technologies (ICT) sectors like telecoms and the internet are reliable sources of growth and crucial for the recovery of the economy. However, the EU's competitiveness depends on attracting and keeping skilled workers, especially in the high-tech sector, including women. But while a shortage of around 300,000 qualified engineers is expected in the EU by 2010, less than 1 in 5 computer scientists are women. The European Commission responded in 2007 by encouraging telecoms and internet companies to attract more "cyberellas" – women with ICT skills. As a result, five major ICT companies will today sign a Code of Best Practices for Women and ICT. They are committing to do more to make tech jobs attractive for women and to make better use of and promote female potential in the ICT sector.

The Voice of 12 000 Patients» (12 000 patients s'expriment).

[06] The European Commission appoints Head of Representation in Sweden

The Commission has appointed a new Head of Representation in Sweden, Pierre Schellekens. He will take on his new duties as of 16 March, 2009.

[07] Regions and local authorities can help overcome distrust of Europe, suggests Eurobarometer survey

Luc Van den Brande, President of the Committee of the Regions (CoR), and European Commission Vice-President Margot Wallström presented a new Eurobarometer survey showing that the majority of European citizens think that regions and local authorities are not only the must trusted layer of government but also best placed to explain how European policies impact on the day-to-day lives of citizens.

[08] Commission clears acquisition of Sapa by Orkla

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Sapa AB of Sweden by Orkla ASA of Norway. Orkla is active in branded consumer goods, aluminium, renewable energy, specialty materials and financial investment sectors. Sapa is active in the manufacture and supply of soft alloy extrusions. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[09] Commission clears acquisition of Cattleya by NBC, De Agostini Communications and IMI

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Cattleya S.p.A. of Italy by NBC Universal (NBC) of the US, De Agostini Communications (‘DeAC) of Luxembourg and IMI Investimenti S.p.A. (IMI) of Italy. NBC develops, produces and markets entertainment, news and information. DeAC is active in film distribution and audiovisual content production. IMI is an equity investments company. [11] Commissioner Joe Borg praises Brittany's coastal charter as "setting the standard"

This morning the Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Joe Borg, attended a presentation at the Committee of the Regions by Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian, President of the Regional Council of Brittany, on Brittany's coastal charter. The product of extensive consultation and cooperation involving Brittany's citizens, businesses and politicians, the charter sets out a vision for the sustainable development of the region's vast coastal areas and seas. The sea is an ever-present part of Brittany's economic, social and cultural development. Not surprisingly, this region has been a leading European maritime region in promoting the European Integrated Maritime Policy. Together with other maritime regions Brittany has been a strong supporter of this Commission's efforts to place maritime regions and activities at centre stage of European policies. Commissioner Borg congratulated Brittany on its initiative which, he said, "sets the standard for other European Union regions which are also developing a new integrated approach to regional maritime policy". The Commissioner highlighted the many parallels linking the charter and the EU's Integrated Maritime Policy. He pointed out that the charter reflects the momentum which this policy has achieved across the European Union and is a fine example of integrated maritime policy at regional level which takes into account real sea-basin specificities.
