  • [01] Tsohatzopoulos-Simitis' meeting

Cyprus and Greek-Turkish relations will be on the agenda when the Greek defence minister meets with American officials in Washington later this week.

Akis Tsochatzopoulos will be in the US at the invitation of the American defence secretary.

Tsochatzopoulos talked about the issues that might come up in the US with prime minister Kostas Simitis Wednesday.

After that meeting the defence minister said the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus problem and an improvement in Greek-Turkish relations had been discussed.

Other issues of regional importance were also looked at by Tsochatzopoulos and Simitis.

    [02] 1st banquet of the Hellenic-American Republicans

Prominent Greek-Americans are telling their fellow expatriates to roll up their sleeves and become active in American politics.

Leading politicians underscored at the first banquet of the Hellenic- American Republicans' Association that a strong Greek voice in American politics can do much to help Hellenism around the world.

New York governor George Pattakis was showered with applause when he told those at the first annual Hellenic-American Republicans Association banquet that he feels like a Greek.

Pattakis was one of four Republican politicians presented with the organisation's distinction, the Olympian Award.

The goal of this new organisation, says HARA chairman Peter Pappas is to encourage Greek- Americans to become active in American politics, regardless of whether they're Republicans or Democrats.

    [03] Weather

The mercury's high and bursting to jump higher. Greece is experiencing its first heat wave of the summer.

It was 102 degrees in some places Wednesday.

People who headed to the beaches to cool off will need plenty more dips in the coming days to beat the heat.

The weatherman says the temperature could climb to as high 104 Thursday and reach 107 over the weekend.

The mercury will start dropping again on Monday.
