[04] Photographer Nelly died at 99

A legend in photography, Nelly Souyoutzoglou- Seraidari died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 99 years.

The pioneering photographer, who was born in Aidini in Asia Minor, and whose work spans almost a century, captured many famous political and artistic figures with her lens.

Nelly was born in 1899 in the Greek city of Aidini on the coast of Asia Minor. At the age of 21 she went to Dresden in Germany to study painting and piano. She soon turned to photography, which had the added bonus of being more lucrative.

She embarked on her photographic career in 1922 when the Turks were decimating Smyrni and other Greek cities on the Asia Minor coast. The Turks had burnt Nelly's birthplace in 1920.

Nelly's photos capture the pain of refugees, but also cover various subjects such as famous figures like Eleftherios Venizelos and Kostis Palamas, and many depict Athens in years gone by.

The photographer shook public opinion with her picture showing dancer Mona Paiva dancing nude amongst the Parthenon pillars in 1927.

In 1939 Nelly moved to New York with her husband where they lived for 27 years before returning to Athens.

Souyoutzoglou's funeral will be held with state honours on Thursday at the Nea Smyrni cemetery in Athens.
