PASOK Eurodeputy and Greece's representative to the European Union's
Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) Yannos Kranidiotis yesterday commented
on Greece's priorities regarding the review of the European Union's
charter.
Greece considered the safeguarding of Europe's citizens' fundamental rights
(economic, political and social) to be paramount, including the right to
work. Secondly, said Kranidiotis, Greece believes joint foreign policy
should be strengthened, and that respect for the territorial integrity and
borders of member states should be included in the charter's basic
principles.
Finally, an effort should be made to maintain the principle of equality
between member states. Kranidiotis said that a French-German proposal for
"reinforced cooperation" would lead to the creation of a hard core of
states with powers to take initiatives. Greece, he added, would have no
objection to such cooperation in matters of defence, justice, police or
internal matters, but was against any concentration of power with regard
to the internal market, the economy or trade.
A group of international scientists on Saturday appealed to Kavala
authorities to put an end to uncontrolled sea fishing, water cultures and
tourist development of the Mediterranean sea coast in the region.
The appeal came from 26 experts from Bulgaria, Romania, The Ukraine, Turkey,
Armenia, Greece, Albania, Israel, Russia as well as other countries.
After a week of discussions on sea fishing and environmental damage in the
Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts, the scientists concluded that sea
fishing activity and uncontrolled development are the main problems of the
Mediterranean sea cost.
The scientists forecast that a host of tehnical measures which have been
forwarded within the EU's Common Fishing Policy will cause intense problems
in the northern Aegean sea region, charecterised by a broad, and close to
the sea surface, continental shelf.
They said that the pending reduction in sea fishing areas, coupled with an
anticipated fishing activity will have damaging effects on fishing
production.
The experts further drew attention to uncontrolled fishing and pollution in
the Black Sea coast urging for coordination of action and planning of a
common administrative policy to deal with the problems.
Black Sea Economic Cooperation Alternate Director, Dan Barliba, stressed
the need for further cooperation with scientists from the countries of the
Black Sea as well as initiatives to explore the possibilities for common
research programmes within the framework of EU and International organisations'
activities.
Police Saturday arrested a Dutchman and two Iranian nationals for
possession and use of fake passports and state bureau stamps.
Police made the arrests of Dutchman Mahdi Kaveh, 32 and Ali Cabarizadek, 31
and Hamid Pasha, 37 (all phonetic spellings) from Iran, at Athens' Olympic
Airport.
The arrested will appear before the public prosecutor.
Police said they were investigating the case.
The body of an unidentified man was found in the sea off the Aghios
Kosmas sports complex near Athens airport this morning.
The man, who had suffered injuries to the left side of his neck and above
the left eye, was aged about 35 and was wearing black trousers, a black
shirt and black training shoes. The body has been taken to Athens morgue
for an autopsy, while an investigation is being carried out by Glyfada port
police.
SPORT
At the European Water Polo Championships in the Netherlands yesterday,
Olympiakos beat the home team Polar Bears 6-3. In Athens, Vouliagmeni won
its own 10th tournament for the second year in a row, beating Patra Yacht
Club 11-6 in the final.
In Saturday's soccer matches, Veria drew with Aris 1-1.
In basketball, Peristeri beat Panionios 92-89, while Apollo Patra defeated
ARis 75-65. Olympiakos romped home against Byzantinos 90-64, giving it a
single day of glory on its own at the top of the score table, since the
winner of today's AEK-Panathinaikos match is sure to even the score.
Meanwhile, the 4th World Police Marathon held in Attica today was won by
the Tunisian Tanah Mansouri in 2h 18m 55sec, heading a field of 155
athletes from 55 countries.
WEATHER
Fine weather is expected over most of the country for Monday, with the
exception of possible light rain in the southeast. Winds will be northerly
light to moderate, with possible strong winds locally in the Aegean.
Temperatures in Athens will range from 13-22C, in Thessaloniki 6-20C.
