[01] internet - Stephanopoloulos - Israel04/01/2000 19:17:35President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos will arrive in Jerusalem on Wednesday, where he will represent Greece in celebrations marking the 2,000-year anniversary of Christ's birth. Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and Deputy FM Grigoris Niotis will also attend the festive events. Stephanopoulos will have separate meetings with his Israeli counterpart Ezer Weizman and Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze. [02] Internet- Markezinis-Death04/01/2000 19:09:56Veteran politician Spyros Markezinis,who held among other post that of 'prime minister' under the military dictatorship in Greece, died Tuesday morning at the age of 90 at his central Athens home. Markezinis was born April 22, 1909 in Athens, and studied law, economics and political science, beginning his career as a lawyer in 1931, and also working as a legal consultant to several firms and foundations, while his political career began in 1936. His government, under the jounta was toppled after the Polytechnic uprising in November 1973. Markezinis himself linked the toppling of his government with his refusal to allow the airports on Crete to be used by the US as refuelling bases on their way to Israel in the event that hostilities with the Arab world resumed. In July 1974 he took part in the meeting of party leaders. His Progressive Party did not participate in the first post-junta elections, nor in the 1977 elections. In the 1981 European Parliament elections, his party elected one deputy. Markezinis was also a prolific author, best known for his massive history of Greece covering the period 1828 to 1975, while in 1979 he published his memoirs of the 1972-74 period. [03] D'Alema - Greece04/01/2000 18:10:22Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema is due in Athens for a working visit on Jan. 10-11, according to reports in the Greek capital on Tuesday. D'Alema is scheduled to meet with Greek President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos and will have talks with Prime Minister Costas Simitis on bilateral and European Union issues. Both Simitis and D'Alema will be guest speakers at a University of Athens event on Jan. 11. [04] Sports roundup04/01/2000 17:48:15Serbian coach Dusan Bagevic made his 'debut' on Tuesday with the PAOK Thessaloniki club, only a few weeks after resigning from league-leading Olympiakos Piraeus. The 51-year-old Yugoslavia native, now a naturalised Greek citizen, will head a PAOK club starved for a championship (the last came in 1976) and European distinctions, following the sacking of Dutch coach Ari Haan recently. He was joined by veteran midfielder Vassilis Borbokis, who returned after a brief career with England's Sheffield Wednesday and Derby. Bagevic had also coached Borbokis when the two were still at AEK. Bagevic is considered one of the most successful coaches in the Greek first division, winning the championship over the past three years with Olympiakos and a total of four championships with AEK Athens, the team he also played for in the late '70s and early '80s. AEK Athens has disappointed its fans this season by less than stellar performances that removed it from the football championship chase and in the middle of the standings. [05] Internet-Stock Market04/01/2000 16:06:06Greek stocks changed direction to end sharply lower on Tuesday in what traders described as a normal correction of the market following a five-day rally which pushed the Athens Stock Exchange 20.68 percent higher. The general index ended 3.56 percent down at 5,588.65 points in heavy turnover of 345 billion drachmas. Shares in the Insurance, Investment, Industrials and Banks sectors were particularly hit. The parallel market index for smaller capitalisation stocks ended 1.50 percent down at 1,678.69 points. The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavy traded stocks fell 3.59 percent to 2,911.76 while the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index ended 2.84 percent off at 1,034.11 points. [06] INTERNET-Markezinis dies04/01/2000 14:39:13Veteran politician Spyros Markezinis died Tuesday morning at the age of 90. He was the only parliamentary party leader to have maintained contacts with the 1967-74 military dictatorship, and agreed to become premier of junta-ruled Greece in October 1973. Markezinis served in several governments before the dictatorship, and as minister of coordination introduced significant reforms in the country's monetary, credit, investments and fiscal policy. He was elected as MP from Athens with the Greek Rally party. In 1955 he set up the now defunct Progressive Party. [07] Internet: Archaeology04/01/2000 13:31:10An ambitious project to unite important archaeological sites in central Athens with walkways effectively begins on Tuesday, with work beginning on the paving of a major avenue at the foot of the Acropolis. Dionysiou Aeropagitou street will be closed to all traffic for the duration of the paving works. It will be the first substantial step towards realising the project to create a so-called 'archaeological park', first articulated by late Culture Minister Melina Mercouri. [08] INTERNET-Opinion poll04/01/2000 11:40:52The percentage of voters who believe prime minister Costas Simitis is the most capable political party leader to govern the country has increased, according to a V.PRC. poll published in Tuesday's issue of TA NEA newspaper. The ruling PASOK party leader was preferred by 43.8 percent of respondents in the poll, carried out in December 1999, up from 41.0 percent and 36.6 percent in similar polls in September and April 1999 respectively. Second in voter preference was main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis, with 33.1 percent against 31.8 percent in September 1999 and 33.9 percent in April last year.
