Greece formally launched the e-commerce era on Tuesday with the first
meeting of the National Electronic Commerce Committee aiming to promote
electronic commerce in the country.
The government's main policy target was to establish Greece as a modern
global commerce centre, Prime Minister Costas Simitis said in a message
to the meeting. He was unable to address the meeting due to a viral
infection.
The Prime Minister's message also referred to the importance of equal
participation and access of all citizens to new technology and the
information society to avoid creation of a new form of illiteracy.
Develoment Minister, Evangelos Venizelos, who inaugurated the meeting
said that Third Community Support Framework's funds to support
development of the information society in Greece would total 780
billion drachmas, offering the country a comparative advantage on the
sector.
A sum of 80 billion drachmas will be earmarked for actions related with
E-commerce.
