Greece will formally submit its application for EMU entry on March 9,
national economy and finance minister Yannos Papantoniou announced
Thursday.
The announcement came after a meeting with President of the Republic
Costis Stephanopoulos, whom Papantoniou briefed on Greece's efforts to
join the euro-zone on January 1, 2001.

Visiting NATO secretary general George Robertson praised Greece's
"important" and "leadership" role in preserving peace in the Balkan
region and welcomed the recent Greek-Turkish rapprochement, after talks
Thursday with prime minister Costas Simitis.
The new NATO chief, who arrived in Athens Wednesday on a two-day visit
as part of a courtesy tour of alliance member states, also discussed
with Simitis EU-NATO relations in the framework of building a European
security and defence identity.
