  • [01] Papantoniou-stock market

    29/02/2000 14:25:12

The Athens Stock Exchange will follow a bumpy road higher, National Economy and Finance Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou, said on Tuesday.

Papantoniou said that the stock market did not need all this talk over its performance and criticised the main opposition party ND for trying to benefit politically from the market's current woes.

Foreign exchange outflows were normal and the country's foreign exchange reserves were two or three times more than Portugal's, he said.

    [02] Russian hitman

    29/02/2000 12:46:07

A team of Russian police are in the northern Greek town of Komotini for consultations with Greek counterparts after interrogating a suspected Russian hitman held in the western port city of Patras, police said Tuesday.

They said the four-member team of Russian police, headed by general Alexander Ivanovic, a homicides expert, met Monday in Komotini with local police officials and the Thrace prosecutor on the case involving Vladimir Tatarenkov, arrested last August in Rhodopi prefecture, who is wanted by Russian authorities for 15 killings.

General Ivanovic told reporters that the Russian authority's considered Tatarenkov's arrest an "immense success" of the Greek police, adding the Russian authorities had evidence against him for 15 killings.
