    [02] Fall of Missolonghi-Stephanopoulos

    President of the Republic Costis Stephanopoulos on Sunday led a celebration for the 174th anniversary of the heroic fall of Missolonghi, western Greece, during Greece's War of Independence.

    Stephanopoulos said that the sacrifice of the "Free Besieged" was unsurpassed, adding that history helped to recall the concept of courage.

    "Thanks to the sacrifice of the Missologhi fighters, the Greek state has consolidated its position in the European family and the world," he added.

    [03] Cosmote- Cables-Theft

    Cables belonging to Cosmote, a mobile phone operator, worth 15-17 million drachmas were stolen from an open-air storage area between the northern cities of Xanthi and Kavala, officials said on Sunday.

    Cosmote is a subsidiary of Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation, which is listed on the Athens bourse.

    The National Armenian Committee on Sunday commemorated the genocide by Turks of 1.5 million Armenians in 1917.

    Taking part in the commemoration, which the committee organised with the prefecture of Athens, were representatives of the government, the country's political parties and the Armenian community in Greece.

    [05] Serbian Opposition-Conference-Declaration

    Serbian opposition leaders have issued a declaration in Athens saying they will tighten ranks in order to push for free national elections that could oust Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.

    The declaration, endorsed by representatives of different Serbian opposition groups and other officials, was released on Saturday at the end of a two-day conference hosted by Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, the son of Yugoslavia's last king before the royal family's expulsion.

    Costas Karamanlis, leader of the conservative New Democracy (ND) party, said on Sunday that he had not challenged the outcome of national elections held on April 9, in which his party came a close second.

    At the same time, allegations of vote-rigging in the polls would be scrupulously examined, said Karamanlis in an interview to the Sunday Eleftherotypia newspaper.
