The Bank of Greece on Wednesday slashed its key intervention rates by
between 0.50 and 0.75 basis points, bringing short-term rates closer to
their EU equivalents. After a meeting of its Monetary Policy Council,
the central bank announced a 0.50 percentage point reduction in the
weekly intervention rate for two-week funds to 8.25 percent. It also
slashed the primary overnight lending rate by 0.75 percentage point to
7.25 percent, and abolished the secondary overnight rate. In addition,
it reduced the Lombard rate by 0.5 percentage point to 9.0 percent.
[02] Border guard killed

A Greek border guards was shot and killed early Wednesday by Albanians
in the rural Argos Orestikou region, police said.
They said Ioannis Pamboukidis, 30, was shot by Albanians carrying
Kalashnikov rifles, who are believed to be drug smugglers.
The Albanians opened fire on Pamboukidis and three other of his
colleagues when the border guards ordered them to stop for a search.
