    [02] Firefighting aircraft-Crash-Fatalities

    15/07/2000 16:20:59

Two Greek Air Force pilots were killed when their Canadair firefighting aircraft crashed early on Saturday, while combatting a forest blaze near the town of Argalasti on Mount Pelion in central Greece. The pilots were identified as Ioannis Mylonas, 41, and Ioannis Karasavvas, 25.

The aircraft had just dropped its load of water on the fire at around 7 a.m. and was leaving the scene when poor visibility created by clouds of smoke caused it to crash into a hillside. The aircraft had taken off from Achialos airport.

Prime Minister Costas Simitis expressed his sorrow over the tragic accident in a statement later and extended his condolences to the pilots' families.
