A mild earthquake jolted the western port city of Patras Thursday, and no damage or panic were immediately reported.

The Patras University Seismology Laboratory recorded a tremor of 3.9 Richter magnitude at 8:37 a.m., with its epicentre in the Rio-Antirrio sea region and coming from a depth of 10 kilometres.

    [02] Oil slick

    12/10/2000 10:30:17

An oil slick was caused by fuel oil in the sea region of Ikonio, Keratsini, near Patras, early Thursday during the unloading of the Kayman Islands-flagged "Captain Spyros" freighter, Harbour Authority sources said.

They said a private team immediately set up a double barrier and commenced clean-up operations, supervised by the Harbour Corps.

No information was immediately available on the quantity of fuel oil spilled or the freighter's cargo.
