    NATO's annual submarine exercise codenamed "Dogfish 2001" will take place in the Ionian Sea and southeast of Sicily on February 15-28, with the purpose of presenting the alliance's ability to conduct coordinated counter-submarine operations.

    The exercise will involve a multinational force composed of surface vessels, submarines, naval cooperation aircraft and helicopters.

    Countries participating are France, Germany, Greece, Britain, the United States, Spain, Italy, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey.

    Greece will participate with a submarine, a naval cooperation aircraft and a destroyer.

    The battle for second place in the Greek national soccer division which leads to a coveted Champions League playoff game next season -- heated up on Sunday after AEK Athens easy win against a weak cross-town opponent brought it just two points behind Panathinaikos Athens.

    Panathinaikos remained in second place with 38 points after losing on Saturday in Thessaloniki to Aris, 1-0.

    League-leader Olympiakos Piraeus, perched atop the Greek standings with 44 points, is set to play later on Sunday evening against Ionikos Piraeus at the latters tough pitch.

    AEKs 3-0 win at Ethnikos Asteras tiny east Athens home field on Sunday brought it to third place with 36 points, four days before the Greek club hosts Spanish powerhouse Barcelona in Athens for the first leg of their UEFA Cup matchup.

    Scattered cloud is forecast throughout most of Greece on Sunday, with showers possible but mostly clearing by the afternoon. Winds north-northeasterly, moderate to strong. In the north, temperatures will range from 2C to 1C; in the Ionian and remaining mainland from 5C to 15C; and in the Aegean islands from 10C to 17C. Cloud and showers in Athens, with temperatures between 9C and 14C. Chance of light rain in Thessaloniki, 4C to 10C.
