Foreign Minister George Papandreou and his counterparts from Balkan
countries will convene for an informal meeting in Skopje on Thursday
evening, during which the Greek minister will present Athens' proposals
for resolving the crisis in the region. The meeting will also discuss
rising violence in southern Serbia and the text of the joint communique
that will be adopted at the end of the Summit.
The Summit itself is due to start on Friday, with an opening statement
by the President of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)
Boris Trajkovski, and will discuss and adopt a plan to promote regional
economic cooperation in southeastern Europe.
On the sidelines of the Summit, Papandreou is scheduled to meet his
Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem on Thursday night to discuss
Greek-Turkish bilateral relations overall and to confer on a schedule
for an exchange of visits.
Meetings on the sidelines of the Summit will also be carried out by
Prime Minister Costas Simitis, who is due to meet his FYROM counterpart
Ljubco Georgievski at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Foreign ministry officials have stressed, however, that there is no
reason to expect any new development on the issue of FYROM's name at
this time.
