A high-ranking Israeli delegation, led by Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres, is continuing to meet in a downtown Athens hotel suite with
representatives of the Palestinian Authority, EU High Representative
Javier Solana told reporters here on Wednesday.
?I have a well-founded hope that the meeting will normalise the
situation in the Middle East,? the former NATO secretary general said
in brief comments after a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Costas
Simitis at the latters office.
Solana, in the Greek capital to speak and attend a three-day
?leadership roundtable? organised by the London-based ?Economist?
group, also said he briefed Simitis over his recent talks in the Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as well as covering EU-related
issues and the situation in the Balkans.
Solana added that he met separately with a Palestinian delegation on
Tuesday evening before holding talks with Peres early Wednesday
morning. He told reporters he was returning to the hotel suite where
Israelis and Palestinians were reportedly holding the unscheduled
talks.
