[01] Thessaloniki - new Jewish Museum13/05/2001 21:00:22Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos inaugurated a new Jewish Museum in Thessaloniki on Sunday, situated in what was once the city's flourishing Jewish district. Thessaloniki's Jewish community was decimated by Nazi persecution during World War II, reduced from 55,000 strong to 1,500 today. Venizelos described the museum as an "Ark of memory and source of learning," and said that its foundation was yet another step toward fulfilling the State's obligations toward the memory of the Jews. The Jewish Museum is located on Aghios Minas Street in one of the few buildings that survived a fire in 1917, a shopping arcade that was renovated by the Thessaloniki Cultural Capital Organisation in 1997. [02] Greece-Tunisia-Visit postponed13/05/2001 19:28:35TUNIS (ANA) - Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's visit to Greece, scheduled for May 14-15, was postponed, a Tunisian foreign ministry's announcement said on Sunday. The postponement was decided "after consultations between the two governments", the announcement said, adding that "a new date for the visit will be jointly fixed as soon as possible". The Tunisian president was due to visit Athens at the invitation of Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos. [03] Greek cup - PAOK victory13/05/2001 19:15:14PAOK Thessaloniki recorded one of its biggest victories ever on Saturday evening in Athens by downing high-flying Olympiakos Piraeus 4-2 to win the Greek Cup. The 2001 trophy for the popular Thessaloniki club came 27 years after it won its last Cup final and on an Athens pitch AEK Athens homefield that has often bedeviled both Olympiakos and current PAOK coach Dusan Bagevic over the past years. The Serbian-Greek national and former AEK player, by far the most successful football coach in the country today, left Olympiakos to sit on PAOKs bench. PAOK opened the score in the fourth minute with a shot outside the penalty area by Cypriot international Yiotis Egomites. One-time Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Vassilis Borbokis doubled PAOKs lead in the 31st minute after league-leading Olympiakos goal keeper failed to hold on to a long shot. PAOK scored another two goals in the second half, while Olympiakos made good on a penalty kick in the 78th minute and another goal in injury time.
