[01] Greek and Turkish orchestras to perform in Ephesus

The Thessaloniki Municipal Orchestra and the orchestra of Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey are scheduled to give a one-time performance on August 3, 2001 at the Ephesus ancient theater in Turkey, in the framework of cultural Olympics.

The concert, which is being organized by the mayors of Thessaloniki and Ephesus together with the Istanbul Philharmonic Company, is set in the backdrop of strengthening relations between the two nations through cultural exchanges and events.

[02] Greek DM to visit Turkey in September, Turkish press says

ISTANBUL (ANA - A. Kourkoulas) - Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos will visit Turkey from September 27-30, at the invitation of his Turkish counterpart Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, the Turkish press reported on Wednesday.

Tsohatzopoulos will be the first ever Greek defence minister to visit Turkey.

Tsohatzopoulos, who accepted the invitation in principle, will be visiting the IDEF exhibition.

[04] Greece condemns FYROM extremists

Greece condemned the actions of extremist elements operating in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) on Wednesday, which succeeded in smashing a fragile truce in that country.

Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas reiterated that Greece wants the neighbouring state to remain unified and current borders to stay the same.

The spokesman also condemned an attack by nationalists against the press office of the Greek Embassy in Skopje on Tuesday,expressing regret over the fact that the Skopje government had not met its obligation to ensure the safety of employees in a Greek service.

[05] Italian authorities release second Greek protestor

ROME (ANA - L. Hatzikyriakos) A Greek protestor who had been arrested in Genoa was released by Italian authorities on Wednesday but will stay in a Genoa hospital until the weekend to recuperate from an emergency operation carried out earlier this week.

Panagiotis Sideriadis had been arrested last Saturday and charged with being a member of an armed gang with the purpose of receiving stolen goods, looting and vandalism.

[06] Weather Forecast: Mostly sunny on Thursday

Mostly sunny weather is forecast throughout the country on Thursday, later clouding over on the central and northern mainland that may lead to isolated storms in Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace and Thessaly. Winds northwesterly, light to moderate, turning very strong in parts of the southeastern Aegean. On the mainland, temperatures will range from 19C to 37C; and in the islands from 22C to 33C. Hot and sunny in Athens with temperatures between 23C and 36C. Same in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 22C to 33C.

[07] Athens Bourse Close: Stocks, turnover mark slight rise

Equities finished slightly higher on Wednesday, showing tentative signs of consolidation after nearly two weeks of mostly sharp increases and declines.

The Athens general share index gained 0.22 percent to end at 2,621.64 points, with turnover at 134.8 million euros, including block trades of 7.7 million euros.

The FTSE/ASE-20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks ended 0.12 percent higher; the FTSE/ASE-40 for medium capitalisation paper 0.67 percent up; and the FTSE/ASE-80 for small cap equities gained 1.08 percent.

Advancers led decliners at 214 to 110 with 53 issues remaining unchanged.

A week ago on Monday the bourse had shed nearly five percent in a session as part of a lasting slump after buyers resolutely stayed out of the market, with small capitalisation shares the worst hit.

Since then, the market has posted roller coaster closes day by day with players recently buying back into blue chips.

[08] Indicative fuel prices: further drop in the tow of worldwide trends

Suggested retail fuel prices for the coming week fell again on Wednesday in response to international trends.

Specifically, prices for super and unleaded petrol fell by 4.1 drachmas per litre, diesel fell by 4.2 drachmas per litre, and out-of-season heating oil fell by 4.7 drachmas per litre.

In greater Athens and the Thessaloniki prefecture, indicative prices for super were set at 241.4 drachmas per litre; 2227.5 for unleaded; 202.9 for diesel and 197.3 drachmas per litre for heating oil.

The government announces indicative prices every Wednesday, effective for one week, although deviations in actual market prices sometimes vary from five to 15 drachmas per litre.

(The fixed exchange rate for drachmas/euros is 340.750 drachmas per euro)
