  • [01] Man charged for Club Med pool drowning to testify on Friday

    22/08/2001 13:59:18

A maintenance man charged with manslaughter over the freak drowning of a boy in an Attica hotel pool was granted until Friday to make his statement when he appeared before the Examining Magistrate on Wednesday.

Yiannis Dimarellis, a 43-year-old maintenance employee at the Golden Coast hotel complex in Marathon, had been charged with manslaughter through negligence on Monday.

The victim of the Sunday accident, a seven-year-old French boy, was literally sucked to the bottom of the hotel pool when a plug covering the water-recycling pump came away.

Frantic efforts by other bathers to pull the boy out and turn off the system proved fruitless, witnesses said. The victim, identified as Alex Blin, was transported to a nearby health clinic in a coma and later died.

Dimitris Roussos, 37, Nikos Tsabarlis, 43, Christoforos Margonis, 33, and Ioannis Margonis, 39, were arrested in a house along Markopoulos beach in Oropos. Three handguns, one automatic weapon, ammunition, 6,192 grammes of cannabis and 890 grammes of heroin were found in their possession.

The four suspects were taken to Attica police headquarters, where police are investigating their possible connection with other criminal acts.
