  • [01] Second part of Greek contingent arrives in FYROM

    24/08/2001 13:29:46

The second section of a Greek contingent assigned to NATO's "Operation Essential Harvest" mission in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) arrived at the Krivolak military base south of Skopje at noon on Friday.

This brings the Greek force currently deployed in FYROM to 148 troops and 75 vehicles detached from the 525 Motorised Battalion stationed in Kilkis, as well as its commanding officers.

Another 263 troops are due to depart from Kilkis for FYROM on Saturday, and the Greek force is expected to begin its mission - monitoring the disarmament of Albanian rebels - at the beginning of next week.

The 3,500 NATO troops in "Operation Essential Harvest" are to collect weapons laid down by Albanian rebels under a peace deal signed between the FYROM government and ethnic Albanian political leaders earlier in August.

In total, the Greek contingent will number 411 men, all volunteers. It forms a comparatively large part of the total NATO force, to which only a handful of member-states have contributed, led by Britain.
