[01] Life in prison for Ekaterini Yiannakopoulou in appeal trial

The appeal trial of Ekaterini Yiannakopoulou, accused of murdering a priest in 1997, ended on Monday with the court convicting her to life imprisonment, changing the initial 20-year jail sentence.

The court rejected the prosecutor's proposal, who requested leniency on the basis of her previous clean police record and the inappropriate behavior of the victim.

Last Tuesday, during the appeal trial, presentation of evidence showed that a one million dollar bank account existed with the names of the priest and an unnamed woman, further complicating the case.

Both the defense and the prosecution explained the existence of the account in different ways.

Yiannakopoulou was convicted in the first trial to a 20-year sentence for the shooting of Archimandrite Anthimos Eleftheriadis in the Nea Smyrni district of Athens.

The woman reportedly told police that she killed the Cypriot-born priest, who was also her confessor, because he had "ruined her life by rejecting her after a relationship spanning eight years."

She also told police that she had bought the murder weapon from an undisclosed Athens store last September and began making plans to kill the priest, whom she at one point described as "god in human form."

Yiannakopoulou was initially convicted on charges of premeditated murder, illegal possession and use of firearms.

The weather will be cloudy throughout the country on Tuesday with rain and storms in the west gradually spreading across the mainland to much of the country. Winds south-southwesterly, strong to very strong, turning gale force at sea. [04] Govt spokesman confirms arrest of 15 UK, Dutch nationals

Acting government spokesman Tilemahos Hytiris officially confirmed on Monday that 15 UK and Dutch nationals had been arrested in Kalamata for taking photographs of an airforce base.

The pictures had been confiscated and the arrested parties were to appear before the public prosecutor, he added, in response to questions.
