    17/03/2002 17:28:52

A police officer and the owner of a cafe in Athens were arrested in connection with the illegal issue of residence and work permits to immigrants in return for payment, Attica aliens police said on Sunday.

The officer was identified as Emmanouil Kantzos, 38, serving in the inner city suburb of Kypseli; and the cafe owner as Stavroula Paravanti, 47.

In their possession were found documents including authorisation slips, employers' statements, and official declarations by private individuals; three employers' rubber stamps, 50 used social insurance stamps, and 820 euros in cash, police said.

Arrested on Friday, the two were due to appear before a public prosecutor on Saturday.
