  • [01] Patriarch's, Archbishops' messages for Orthodox Easter

    02/05/2002 13:11:05

Several of Eastern Orthodoxys top religious leaders, including Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos, Archbishop of Tirana and All Albania Anastasios as well as Archbishop of Cyprus Chryssostomos, issued messages and prayers during the ongoing Orthodox Easter Week and just a few days before Easter Sunday the most venerated date in the Orthodox religious calendar.

The Patriarch noted in his message that the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ is a ?milestone of happiness amid the sea of sadness engulfing the world?, before expressing his wish that ?all those of our fellow men plagued by various afflictions and misadventures experience the joy of this celebration?.

In his message, Christodoulos stresses that ?Christ is Risen!?, and that the message of the Resurrection ?affects us all, as we are weary of lifting the weight of unjustified hopes, and of mourning on the ruins of our personal happiness.?

Anastasios stresses that ?as we celebrate today the reconciliation, par excellance, of man with God, the first thing we must do is to try and reconcile ourselves with our fellow man, with our home, our workplace, society, our Church ... as well as with our land; but also with those far away, forgetting bitterness, forgiving insults, overcoming small or great injustices.?

Finally, the Archbishop of Cyprus, Chryssostomos, notes that ?the Resurrection of Christ comprises one of the greatest and most joyful events in the Orthodox Church?, adding that ?Easter marks the triumph of life over sin and death, as well as love over evil and hate.?
