[01] Athens Stock Exchange opening: stocks edge downward

Equities were slipping in lacklustre trade at the opening of trading Wednesday on the Athens Stock Exchange, though losses were far more restricted than those in other European stock markets.

The general share price index was down 0.32 per cent in the first 45 minutes to stand at 2,124.86 points, with turnover at 5.10 million euros.

The biggest gains in individual sector indices were in Television and Recreation, driven up 1.69 per cent by rising OPAP stock, while the biggest losses were in Refineries, down 1.27 per cent.

The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 0.46 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 0.31 percent, and the FTSE/ASE SmallCap 80 index was down 0.07 percent.

Of the stocks moved, 56 were up, 96 were down and 51 were unchanged.

[02] Weather Forecast: Sunshine on Wednesday

Sunshine is forecast in all parts of the country, with scattered cloud on the mainland from early evening. Winds north-northwesterly, moderate, turning strong at sea. In the north, temperatures will range from 18C to 31C; on the rest of the mainland from 20C to 34C; and in the islands from 23C to 33C. Temperatures in Athens between 24C and 33C; and in Thessaloniki between 23C and 30C.
