[01] Court rejects motion to block classical Marathon route widening

A Council of State judicial review board on Saturday provided the green light for a highly touted project to widen and beautify the ?classical? Marathon route linking the ancient battlefield of the same name and central Athens.

The decision rejects a motion by residents of several east Attica townships and organisations -- the area where the Marathon site is located -- to prevent the expropriation of lands adjacent to the Athens-Marathon roadway on which the popular long-distance footrace will be run during the 2004 Olympics.

The review board also rejected a motion against a relevant environmental impact study for the project.

The CoS is Greeces highest administrative court. No immediate word on whether the petitioners will appeal to the CoS plenum was given.

Thunderstorms are forecast for northwest Greece and the Ionian islands on Sunday, with clouds and scattered rain showers possible elsewhere. Southerly winds, mild to moderate, turning northerly into the afternoon. Temperatures between 13C to 22C in the north; 16C to 27C in the rest of the mainland, and 20C to 28C on the islands.
