    A emergency and rescue unit based in Thessaloniki is expected to depart over the next 24 hours for a quake-ravaged city in southeastern Iran, following consultations on Friday by the foreign ministry and the Greek embassy in Tehran.

    A severe tremor, measuring up to 6.7 on the Richter scale, rocked the ancient township of Bam just before dawn on Friday morning. Casualties are expected to reach the thousands.

    Morning rains are expected to give way to sunny skies on Friday throughout most of the country. Gusty to gale force intensity winds are also forecast on the seas. Temperatures between -4C to 6C in the north; 7C to 13C on the islands.

    A chance of rain in Athens, sleet in the surrounding mountains, 5C to 9C. Freezing rain and snow in Thessaloniki, 3C to 6C.

    A small freighter ran aground,on Thursday, off a tiny central Greece harbour after heavy seas caused it to break away from its moorings.

    The North Korea-flagged ?Lounes? ran aground 150 metres from the pier where it was docked. All six crewmembers, five Greeks and a Syrian national, were unhurt, while no leakage from the vessels fuel tanks was reported.

    Force 8-9 winds were recorded in the region.
