    The Tourism Panorama exhibition, taking place for the ninth consecutive year and dedicated this year to Athens and the Olympic Cities Network, opened its doors to the public on Thursday.

    Cyprus is the honoured country this year, on the occasi;on of its accession to the European Union on May 1.

    Meanwhile, a report prepared by the Kappa Research company every year in the framework of the exhibition is of particular interest. According to it the trend this year is for a decrease in overnight stays of Greeks at home and an increase in trips abroad (four out of 10 Greeks travel abroad).

    As regards the duration of their holidays, the average duration of holidays for Athenians is two weeks in August. This year, 40 percent of Athenians will prefer to take their holidays in August. The average amount of their costs is 1,400 euros, meaning about 100 euros a day for an average family.

    [02] Greek-Arab children's charity to host event in Athens

    The Greek-Arab Society ''Care for the Child'' will be hosting an event at the Str. Vassilikos Hotel in Athens on Friday at 20:00, where the public can find out about its charitable work and lend its support.

    It will be attended by diplomats and Arab and Greek business people, among others.

    Among the charity's projects is a programme to provide health care and preventative medicine to Greeks and Arabs in need, underway since last October and provision of humanitarian aid to families of Iraqi children being treated at Athens hospitals.

    The organisation also seeks to develop ties between Greek and Arab children, and other child-related initiatives.

    Sunny weather is forecast in most parts of the country, with showers possible in eastern Macedonia and Thrace from early evening. Winds northerly, light to moderate, turning strong in parts of the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens from 8C to 20C and in Thessaloniki between 8C and 20C.

    [05] Athens Bourse Close: Stocks rise in higher turnover

    The Athens bourse finished higher with turnover almost double the previous session, traders said.

    The general share index gained 1.27 per cent to end at 2,516.57 points. Turnover was 196.5 million euros.

    The FTSE/ASE-20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks ended 1.43 per cent up; the FTSE/ASE-40 for medium capitalisation paper 1.21 per cent higher; and the FTSE/ASE-80 for small cap equities rose 0.75 per cent.

    Of stocks traded, advances led declines at 214 to 85 with 66 issues remaining unchanged.

    [06] Lecture on Olympic Truce to be held in London

    A lecture on the Olympic Truce is to be held at London University on April 29, organised by the Greek Institute for Culture in Britain.

    The main speaker will be the head of the International Olympic Truce Centre Stavros Lambrinidis, who will present the special educational material prepared by the centre for schools for the first time in Britain.

    The lecture is being organised to mark the Olympic Games in Athens in collaboration with the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, which is celebrating the 125th anniversary since its foundation.
