  • [01] President Stephanopouos receives Greek expatriate students from Australia

    President of the Republic Costis Stephanopoulos on Wednesday received 22 students descended from Greek expatriates currently studying at various universities in Australia that offer Greek Studies courses.

    The students are in Greece on a six-week visit as guests of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

    [02] European Consumer Centre set up

    The General Secretariat for Consumers has set up a new service called the European Consumer Centre, where Greeks can complain or seek information following commercial transactions carried out across the border. It will also deal with the queries of European consumers visiting Greece.

    The service will operate for 2005-2006 with the support of the European Union and the Greek development ministry, while it forms part of a network of such centres operating in the 25 EU member-states.

    [03] Gov't announces 40 million euros energy project

    The government on Wednesday announced a 40 million euros energy project, calling on interested partieis to submit proposals on linking alternative energy sources to the country's energy grid.

    Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas urged interested parties to submit their proposals on linking alternative energy sources to the country's energy grid, a plan budgetted at 40 million euros.

    The projects to be included in the plan will be funded by the "Competitiveness" Business Programme of the Third Community Support Framework.

    The deadline to submit proposals ends December 31, 2005 with the government covering 50 percent of total budget.

    [04] Envelope containing white powder sent to British Council in Athens

    A staff member at the British Council in Kolonaki, Athens on Wednesday found an envelope containing an unidentified white powder.

    The British Council alerted the fire department, which sent a team of 10 specially-trained hazardous materials experts equipped with special suits to pick up the envelope and take it to the Centre for Special Diseases.

    The envelope's contents will be tested to see if they are toxic or whether the incident was a hoax.
