  • [01] Four injured in train collision in Serres, listed in good condition (ADDS)

Four people were injured, including a Bulgarian train driver, after a passenger train collided with a goods train in Rodopolis, Serres early on Thursday. Doctors at Serres Hospital said that none of the injuries gave cause for grave concern, while the most serious was that of the Bulgarian driver, who has fractured his thigh.

The accident occurred early Thursday when OSE passenger train #1630 collided sideways with the goods train as it entered the OSE station in Rodopolis. The passenger train was carrying 30 passengers, most of them teachers who used the train daily to go to the schools where they teach. The goods train was carrying out the Serres-Thessaloniki route.

Three Greek nationals were injured, suffering light muscle strains, while other reports said that five OSE staff were also lightly injured.

The passengers and the train drivers immediately disembarked from the trains.

A team of 15 firefighters, with 7 fire engines, immediately rushed to the scene and extinguished a fire that resulted from the collision, while three ambulances from the local Health Centre took the four injured people to hospital.

Traffic on the Thessaloniki-Serres train line was disrupted, with passengers being rerouted to their destinations from Thessaloniki to Serres, Drama and Thrace on OSE buses, and resumed several hours later after OSE employees removed the two trains from the tracks.

According to initial reports, OSE experts believe the accident was due to human error involving running through a stop light.

Reports from Bulgaria, meanwhile, said that the Bulgarian railroad organisation BDJ blamed the accident on the Greek passenger train, saying it had failed to observe the traffic code. It also said that the injured man had not been driving the train but was a technical observer, since Bulgarian drivers are not permitted to drive trains through Greek territory.

[02] Greek PM satisfied with healthcare policy progress

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Thursday expressed his satisfaction over progress made in the healthcare sector during the last 12 months, although he stressed several things still needed to be done since the Health ministry demanded constant effort to offer its services to citizens.

Speaking to reporters, after a two-and-a-half hour meeting with Health Minister Nikitas Kaklamanis, Karamanlis said conditions in state hospitals would improve substantially if a doctors' duty roster programme was strictly enforced. The Greek PM said that a duty roster programme has already helped significantly in the proper function of hospitals and announced it would be introduced -on a pilot base- in Thessaloniki.

Karamanlis also said the government would earmark more funds to hire new staff in hospitals and noted that the government was obliged to offer the best healthcare services possible to its citizens.
