[01] PM satisfied with sports sector reforms
Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Friday expressed his satisfaction
with the progress of reforms in the sports sector, following his
same-day meeting with Deputy Sports Minister George Orfanos.
Other issues up for discussion included Greece's candidacy for the 2009
world swimming championship and the Euro football championship in 2012,
along with a draft bill envisioning stricter measures against fan
hooliganism.
Asked about the controversial issue of including Greek first division
football matches in direct betting pools, Orfanos reiterated that a
study is underway to allow their inclusion as of this season (beginning
in September) in tandem with another two or three matches of foreign
clubs.
He also said the study will examine issues of incompatibility of
contract-holders (namely, the Intralot company) with sports clubs'
ownership.
[02] Security measures in Greece adequate, spokesman says
The government reacted with concerted actions following Thursday's
terrorist attacks in London, alternate government spokesman Evangelos
Antonaros said Friday, replying to a question on whether the government
intended to take additional security measures in Greece.
During a regular press briefing, Antonaros said that all the necessary
measures have been taken, adding that Greece was safe.
He further said that the measures were adequate for the safety of the
country's citizens and tourists.
