  • [01] Flamenco musical Los Tarantos, star-struck love of Gypsy youths from rival families, opens Thursday at Herod Atticus Theatre

Once upon a time there was a boy and a girl. They met and fell in love. But the enmity between their families turned the song of love into a tragedy...

Los Tarantos, the romantic and tragic love of Juana and Ismail, two Gypsy youths from rival families, reminiscent of Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers "Romeo and Juliet", but with the theme of passion, love and hate set in the Roma society in the old district of Somorrostro in Barcelona and using the Gypsies' musical language of flamenco, based on the play "Historio de los Tarantos" by celebrated Spanish writer Alfredo Manas, opens Thursday night at the Herod Atticus Theatre in Athens for two performances.

The production, which for the first time marries two different genres, musical and flamenco, will be staged at the Herod Atticus on Thursday and Friday, and presented with Greek subtitles, in the context of the Hellenic Festival.

The play was written by Manas in 1960, and the flamenco musical premiered in Barcelona in 2004, staged by the Barcelona Musical Theatre, with the libretto and lyrics written by Emilio Hernandez, who is also the stage director. The musical part was created by two renowned composers: flamenco guitarists Juan Gomez (Chicuelo) and Jose Fernandez Torres (Tomatito), under the musical direction of Eduardo Cortes conducting the live orchestra and singers, while the choreography is by Javier Latorre, one of the most eminent flamenco choreographers in Spain.

The main roles are performed by some of the most distinguished Spanish dancers, such as Carmelilla Montoya, Ana Salazar (Juana), Juan Carlos (Ismail), and Candy Roman.
