  • [01] Heavy storms and hail follow heatwave

Serious problems have been created in many regions of northern Greece due to heavy rainstorms and hail which followed a week-long heatwave throughout the country.

The storms began on Friday evening and are continuing through Saturday, while the rain is expect to move down to central Greece, the Cycladic islands, the Aegean and parts of the Attica region.

In the village of Kalhas in Komotini, northern Greece, a stream overflowed and the Firebrigade rescued six persons, who found refuge on the roofs of their homes, as well as 70 sheep.

In the prefecfure of Halkidiki, the Firebrigade recceived 15 calls to pump out water from the city of Polygyros. In Nea Apollonia of Thessaloniki, a shepherd nearly lost his life when the stream overflowed by the gushing waters which swept in their way many of his goats which drowned.

Meanwhile, extensive damage was caused to many vineyards in Myrtofytou, in the municipality of Eleftheron due to heavy hail which struck the region.

The hail also damaged many agricultural vehicles, while minor damage was caused to the provincial road network of Eleftheron Municipality from the fall of trees.

The weather is expected to improve on Sunday.

[02] KKE leader to attend Lebanese Communist party event honouring slain former leader Hawi

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) leader Aleka Papariga and KKE central committee member Elias Leggeris were due to leave on Saturday for Lebanon to attend a political event organised by the Lebanese communist party.

A KKE announcement said that the KKE officials would take part in the political event being organised on Sunday in Beirut in honour of slain Lebanese communist party former leader George Hawi.

Lebanese Communist Party former secretary general George Hawi was assassinated on June 21 in a car bomb attack in the Wata Mouseitbeh district in western Beirut.

Hawi is widely known as a living symbol of leftist political movements historically in Lebanon.

[03] Engine trouble on two ferriies causes distress to passengers

Hundreds of passengers again were distressed on Saturday when the ferry "Romilda" of the company G.A. Ferrris experienced engine trouble off the coast of Folegandros with Piraeus as its destination.

The ferry was sailing at reduced speed to Piraeus port which will create further delay in its arrival there. Due to the delay, it was unkown whether the ship would carry out its afternoon route.

Engine trouble also occurred on the ferry "Dimitroula" of the same company, when it docked at the port of Aghios Kirykos. The ship set sail again after a two-hour delay. It was carrying about 1,200 passengers.

Deputy Culture Minister for Sport, in statements to the radio station SuperSpor on Saturday, referred to the undertaking of the 2006 World Athletics Cup in Athens and the European Cup (B' group A' category men/women) which will be held the same year in Thessaloniki.
