  • [01] Government denies rumours of new property taxes

The Finance Ministry denied press reports claiming that new property taxes would go into effect, in a statement it issued on Friday.

"Despite the Finance Ministry's unequivocal denial recently regarding new property taxes, those insisting on dreaming up scenarios are back at work. The only result of these irresponsible scenarios is to upset and mislead the public," the ministry stated.

It went on to add that through a recent proposal the government has announced the reform of the property tax system beginning in 2006 in an effort to combat tax evasion and "to improve the operation of the real estate market in order to benefit citizens."

Additionally, the proposed reforms quadruple the tax-exempt level in case of inheritance and double the number of instalments for the payment of tax, the ministry clarified.

"Despite all this, however, there are those that persist in trying to confuse the Greek public, leading citizens to draw wrong conclusions and make incorrect choices. Everyone must assume their responsibility in accurately informing the Greek public," the statement concluded.
