[02] Inner Cabinet discusses OA future

An Inner Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, on Tuesday discussed developments in Olympic Airlines.

Speaking to reporters, after the meeting, Transport and Communications Minister Mihalis Liapis said he briefed the Inner Cabinet over progress in an international tender to sell the national carrier and discussed the future of the company.

Later in the afternoon, an inter-ministerial Commission meeting would be presented with the recommendation of the government's financial consultant over the outcome of the tender before official announcements were made over the future of Olympic Airlines.

"We took instructions," the Greek minister said, adding that "after a European Commission's decision dated September 13, everything has changed for Olympic Airlines.

Transport ministry sources said the government was expected to table a draft legislation envisaging the creation of a new airline company after an international tender to sell the national carrier was declared inconclusive. The government's financial consultant was then expected to begin consultations with candidates in a new combined ownership scheme company. The new company's business plan is expected to be ready in the next two months.
