  • [01] Hellas SAT expands collaborations, signs cooperation accord with SES ASTRA

Greece's telecoms satellite Hellas-SAT on Tuesday announced an expansion in its collaborations, with the signing of a cooperation agreement for the use of capacity of the Hellas-SAT 2 satellite by the European satellite organisation SES ASTRA.

The agreement allows SES ASTRA to include the Hellas-SAT 2 capacity in its offers, and to provide an integrated European-wide coverage to its clients.

Hellas SAT and SES ASTRA have been closely collaborating in recent years by virtue of various services agreements, while the SES ASTRA subsidiary company SatLynx already uses capacity of Hellas-SAT 2 in its Eurozone services platform "Connect", providing Eurozone (broadband) services from one end of Europe to the other.

The Athens-based HELLAS SAT is the owner and a wholesaler of capacity and services of the Hellas-Sat 2 satellite which was launched successfully on May 13, 2003.

It is a subsidiary of the HELLAS SAT Consortium Ltd., a joint Greece-Cyprus venture registered in Cyprus, with the OTE-Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation (www.ote.gr) as the majority shareholder, partnered with the strategic investors Hellenic Aerospace Industries SA (www.haicorp.com) and Telestet Canada (www.telesat.com).

SatLynx is a provider of satellite-based, interactive, two-way broadband services. SATLYNX is based at ASTRA headquarters in Luxembourg, and serves the European market

SES ASTRA (www.ses-astra.com) the leading provider of satellite services in Europe.

It operates the ASTRA Satellite System, offering a comprehensive portfolio of broadcast and broadband solutions for customers in Europe and beyond. ASTRA broadcasts television and radio programmes directly to millions of homes, and provides internet access and network services to governments, large corporations, small- to medium-sized enterprises and individual households.

ASTRA is headquartered in Betzdorf, Luxembourg, from where the company conducts centralised functions such as spacecraft and payload operations, 24x7 technical assistance and corporate activities. In addition, affiliate offices in key markets in Europe provide local sales and marketing support.

ASTRA is part of SES GLOBAL, a family of satellite operators and network providers which, combined, offers global reach.

[02] Inner Cabinet discusses OA future

An Inner Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, on Tuesday discussed developments in Olympic Airlines.

Speaking to reporters, after the meeting, Transport and Communications Minister Mihalis Liapis said he briefed the Inner Cabinet over progress in an international tender to sell the national carrier and discussed the future of the company.

Later in the afternoon, an inter-ministerial Commission meeting would be presented with the recommendation of the government's financial consultant over the outcome of the tender before official announcements were made over the future of Olympic Airlines.

"We took instructions," the Greek minister said, adding that "after a European Commission's decision dated September 13, everything has changed for Olympic Airlines.

Transport ministry sources said the government was expected to table a draft legislation envisaging the creation of a new airline company after an international tender to sell the national carrier was declared inconclusive. The government's financial consultant was then expected to begin consultations with candidates in a new combined ownership scheme company. The new company's business plan is expected to be ready in the next two months.
