According to the official itinerary, the Greek business delegation will comprise representatives of some 45 enterprises active in the fields of agricultural industry, tobacco industry, shipping, computer software, and the clothing industry, who will meet with their Chinese counterparts. More than 250 meetings between Greek and Chinese entrepreneurs have been arranged to take place in Beijing, and a further 155 meetings in Shanghai, the second stop for the Greek business mission, with the assistance of the Economic and Trade Relations Office of the Greek embassy in China. The Hellenic-Chinese Business Forum will be convened in Bejing during the visit, in order to facilitate consultations between the two business communities. Diplomatic sources said that great interest has been displayed by Chinese businessmen to attend the Forum. A Forum meeting was also held in Athens recently during a visit here by the president of the Shanghai stock exchange. The purpose of the business mission is to promote Greek business activity through the entry of Greek products with comparative advantages on the Chinese market, and also to encourage joint ventures between Greek and Chinese business concerns, as well as to attract Chinese investments in Greece. In addition to commercial transactions, aimed at improving the negative trade balance which is tipped in China's favour, the Greek side also places great emphasis on the sectors of merchant shipping and tourism. The Greek business community is interested in promoting the use of more Greek shipping services for the transport of Chinese products, aimed at use of the Greek ports as transit centres for the Balkans and the Middle East. The promotion of tourism trade is also considered of great importance, particularly the attraction of Chinese tourists and students by offering high quality services. The ancient Greek civilisation and culture is greatly admired by the Chinese, according to Greek diplomats with long experience in China, who added that it is not by chance that Greece is among the top, if not the top, tourism destination of Chinese visitors in Europe. Stylianidis will further meet with deputy foreign minister Ma Xiuhong and other officials of the Chinese government, both in the framework of the business mission and preparations for Karamanlis' visit.
