  • [01] Christmas tradition of carols at presidential mansion celebrated

President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias received several groups of Christmas carollers from around Greece on Friday at the presidential mansion, an annual tradition for the country's head of state.

Many of the groups hailed from Papoulias' native province of Epirus, in mountainous northwestern Greece, whereas one group of carollers was comprised of Palestinian children.

Afterwards, the Greek president was set to attend a luncheon hosted by the presidential honor guard.

Meanwhile, in an annual Christmas message to expatriate Greeks around the world, Papoulias said the ongoing era of global changes is the new environment in which "Hellenism, and the Diaspora, in general, is called upon to play a significant role."

He added that overseas Greeks comprise a very special part of Hellenism, "whose success, energy, work and diverse contribution to Greece makes us all proud."

In conclusion, Papoulias stresses that ethnic Greeks in every corner of the world represent bridges between their metropolitan motherland and their new homelands.

[02] Sioufas hails launch of Echedoros power plant

The start of operations for Greece's first privately-owned power plant in Echedoros, Thessaloniki on Saturday will be a historic moment for the Greek energy market, Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas said on Friday. The 390MW plant is a subsidiary of Hellenic Petroleum (ELPE).

Sioufas, who was answering reporters' questions after hearing a group of carollers sing traditional Christmas carols, said the new plant provides new possibilities and prospects for safety and the stability of the system.

The deregulation of the electricity and natural gas markets according to rules will create a new state of affairs that will bring new investments, increase employment and provide businesses, industry and domestic consumers with alternative options when choosing their supplier of power, Sioufas said, stressing that this was a major conquest.
