[01] FinMin: 1-year extension to cut deficit 'would be welcome'Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis was briefed by Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis on Tuesday over economic developments in the country.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Alogoskoufis said 2006 was a year of implementing major economic reforms, while he stressed that the government was working towards reducing a fiscal deficit below 3.0 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product. The minister, replying to reporters' questions over whether the European Commission would offer an one-year extension to Greece in order to reduce its deficit, said "one more year never harmed anybody". He also noted that the government would maintain its so-called "mild adjustment policy." "We have not asked for an extension, but if the Commission makes any such offer it would be welcome," Alogoskoufis said. Caption: A file photo of the European Commission building in Brussels.
