According to official figures, overall consumption of natural gas in Greece rose by 17 percent over the past two years, with the biggest increase in household use, which rose by 100 percent, followed by industry with a 28 percent increase, while a 30 percent rise was anticipated in 2006.

Sioufas also reminded that prime minister Costas Karamanlis will on Saturday inaugurate a natugral gas refuelling station for ETHEL public transport buses in Anthoussa, the second in the Attica prefecture. The first such station is located in the Ano Liosia suburb of Athens.

The station, built and operated by DEPA, the Public Gas Corporation, is the largest of its kind in Europe and environment friendly, as its high-tech facilities ensure zero hydrocarbon emissions.

The project, which cost 4.9 million euros, was funded 25% by the European Regional Development Fund, another 25% through the Development Ministry's 'Competitiveness' operational programme, and 50% by DEPA.

Sioufas said that the station had a capacity of refuelling up to 36 buses per hour, and a delivery capacity of 5,000 cubic meters of natural gas per hour.

He added that 500 buses would be using the refuelling station at Anthoussa, while 415 would be refuelling at the Ano Liosia station.
