  • [01] KKE leader meets President Papoulias

In a meeting on Thursday with President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias, Communist Party of Greece (KKE) General Secretary Aleka Papariga raised the issue of the alleged abductions of Pakistanis living in Greece by intelligence services investigating the London terror attacks and a draft resolution tabled at the Council of Europe (CoE) calling for condemnation of the "crimes of totalitarian Communist regimes".

The leader of KKE said she was convinced that the alleged abductions had, in fact, taken place and that they were the result of agreements made by the government of Costas Simitis within an EU framework. She claimed that similar abductions had been carried out by U.S. authorities in Latin America and that the "phenomenon" had now come to Europe.

Papariga described the contents of the draft resolution, which is slated for discussion at the CoE parliamentary assembly on January 26, as a "fascist delirium" that "declares war on Communist ideology".

She called on members of the Greek Parliament to take action to ensure that the memorandum was not passed.

[02] Bassiakos visits flooded farms in northern Greece

Agricultural Development Minister Evangelos Bassiakos on Thursday visited flood-stricken regions of northern Greece, accompanied by Deputy Agriculture Minister Alexandros Kontos and the head of the agricultural compensation body ELGA.

The minister inspected damage inflicted to crops and homes by the unprecedented high rainfall and the rising waters of the Evros River, which has flooded homes and caused roads in the area to subside.

Bassiakos later attended a meeting with local authority officials in the Evros Prefecture, after which he stressed that the government was determined to provide immediate compensation to those that suffered flood damage.

He said the agriculture ministry will carry out anti-flooding works - which had already been initiated in the framework of Community and national programmes - to avoid similar phenomena in the future.
