Premier briefed over economic policy issues

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Friday was briefed by Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis over economic policy issues.

Speaking to reporters, after the meeting, Alogoskoufis said the European Commission's forecasts for Greece's stability programme would be positive, based on discussions he had with Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker in Vienna.

The Greek minister said the European Commission was expected to publish its report in February before judgments were made in March. Alogoskoufis also briefed the Greek PM over the priorities of the Austrian EU presidency in the first half of 2006 and noted that Vienna was determined to promote policies aimed at boosting competitiveness based on the Lisbon strategy.

[02] PASOK comments on state of economy

Main opposition PASOK party spokesman Nikos Athanassakis, commenting on Friday on statements by Finance and Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis who spoke of very positive indications regarding the ratification of the stabilisation programme by the European Union, said that only Alogoskoufis anticipates positive developments for the economy but he is disproved systematically.

Athanassakis said that the assurances of Alogoskoufis will have the same fate as those for the securitisation of uncollected revenues which were abandoned haphazardly.

"The course of the Greek economy is not good," Athanassakis said, adding that the government's economic policy, which favours the few at the expense of the many, has collapsed.

The PASOK party's spokesman also accused the government of limiting itself to the role of an ordinary observer of developments in the market, instead of taking all necessary measures enabling the functioning of businesses, particularly those of great importance in the farming sector.
