  • [01] State authorities prepared for inclement weather

State agencies have been fully prepared since the weekend for the inclement weather predicted to sweep the country over the next two to three days, Minister of the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation Prokopis Pavlopoulos told Alpha radio in an interview on Monday.

He said that state agencies being ready for bad weather before it hits "should serve as the basis in the future, so that they all operate automatically [when necessary]."

Pavlopoulos noted that "now we prepare" making a comparison to previous years when no preparations were made.

Passenger ferries serving many of the longest routes in the Aegean remained tied up at the ports of Piraeus and Rafina on Monday, as at least one prediction of dire weather for the east Mediterranean country, namely, rough seas, materialised.

Warnings and wide-spread local press coverage of "polar-like" conditions as a result of a forthcoming Siberian cold front merely generated snow flurries in central Thessaloniki late Monday morning, with heavier but not unseasonable snowfall reported in mountainous regions around the northern city.

Frost on roadways and snowfall on provincial highways was also reported in certain parts of northern Greece.

In the greater Athens area, only the summit and foothills beneath Mount Parnitha, northwest of downtown Athens, witnessed snowfall.

[02] Campaign against human trafficking opens in Athens

An international campaign titled "End Human Trafficking Now," kicked off in Athens on Monday bringing royalty, politicians and artists to the Greek capital.

Attendees included Sweden's Queen Sylvia, Queen of Bahrain Sabika, former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble, French composer Jean Michel Jarre and others.

The campaign, organised by the Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement, aims to send the message that step by step, atrocious crimes committed in the name of corporate profits must be stopped.

UNESCO's Good Will Ambassador and board member of the Women's International Peace Movement organisation Marianna Vardinoyannis described Monday's meeting as one of historical importance and an honour for the country, since it is from Greece that the message aimed at rallying the international business community in the fight against human trafficking is being sent.

On her part, Mubarak urged the business community to put an end to this horrific phenomenon, which according to her, is not only unethical but one of the greatest crimes against humanity.
